House Committee to Hold Public Hearing on Bills to Boost Agricultural Education and Research

The House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions will hold a public hearing on Monday, May 19, 2025, to consider 11 key bills aimed at expanding Nigeria’s agricultural education, research, and entrepreneurship infrastructure.

The hearing is scheduled to begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. in Conference Room 023 of the House of Representatives New Building at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Isiaq Akinlade, described the hearing as an important step towards achieving food security, institutional growth, rural development, and innovation in agricultural education.

“This hearing underscores the House’s commitment to inclusive and transformative lawmaking that prioritises food security, skills development, institutional strengthening, and research innovation in the agricultural education sector,” Rep. Akinlade said.

The bills under consideration include proposals for the Federal College of Land Resources Technology in Rabah, Sokoto State; the Federal College of Agriculture and Forestry in Oban Akamkpa, Cross River State; the National Institute for Agricultural Research and Entrepreneurship in Owode, Ogun State; and the Federal College of Agriculture in Igbeti, Oyo State.

Others are the Federal College of Agriculture, Urhonigbe, Edo State; Fisheries and Aquatic Studies Research Institute, Darki, Kano State; National Bamboo Research and Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Rivers State; Federal College of Agriculture and Vocational Studies, Ogbia, Bayelsa State; Federal University of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology, Igbo-Ora, Oyo State; Federal College of Fisheries and Agriculture; and Federal University of Agriculture, Akure, Ondo State.

Agricultural stakeholders, civil society organisations, and the general public are invited to participate and contribute during the public hearing.

The session is expected to promote transparency, inclusiveness, and alignment with national development goals.

The House reiterated its commitment to transparent and accountable legislative processes, particularly in driving growth in Nigeria’s agriculture sector through education and research.
