The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly condemned the recent attack on female students at the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State. Armed terrorists reportedly invaded hostels on July 26, raping over 30 female students and abducting several others.
In a statement released on August 5, HURIWA described the incident as shocking and unacceptable. The human rights group blamed the dastardly attack on the Nigerian Police, adding that it failed to prevent the attack, despite signs of terrorist presence around the school for weeks. They also criticised the Nasarawa State government and federal authorities for neglecting their duty to protect students. HURIWA is calling for urgent psychological support for the victims and compensation of ₦50 million for each affected student. Meanwhile, the federal and state governments have been urged to take immediate action to prevent future attacks and ensure the safety of all students.
