The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Jigawa State has raised concern over more than 30 specialist doctors leaving the State in just four months.
NMA Chairman, Dr Usman, said the main reason for their exit is poor salaries and bad working conditions. He warned that if nothing is done, more doctors may also leave, making the healthcare system even worse. Haruna, the doctors left due to poor working conditions and low pay, leaving the State’s healthcare in crisis.
Speaking at a press conference in Dutse, Dr Haruna revealed that Jigawa now has only one doctor for every 30,000 people, far below the global standard of one doctor per 600 patients. He blamed the state government for failing to implement an approved salary review. In February, Governor Umar Namadi had asked a committee to align state doctors’ pay with federal standards, including allowances. However, Dr Haruna said the committee has done nothing, despite a two-week deadline. He described the inaction as deliberate sabotage that could reverse the government’s efforts to improve the health sector.
