A professor of Educational Management, Ebenezer Adu, has stated that Nigerian students will take education more seriously if job opportunities await them after graduation.
He made this point while delivering the second inaugural lecture at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI).
Prof. Adu expressed worry that many students are losing interest in academic activities because they are unsure of what the future holds once they leave school. He added that the education sector is also struggling due to inadequate funding, noting that Nigeria has not met UNESCO’s recommendation of spending at least 15 per cent of its annual budget on education.
According to him, without enough investment and clear job prospects, students will remain discouraged, and the system will continue to produce weak results despite years of study. He called on government and policymakers to connect education with employment opportunities while also boosting funding to strengthen the sector.
His lecture, themed “Fixing the Engine, Not Just the Destination,” stressed that reforms are urgently needed to make schooling more effective and meaningful for Nigerian youths.
