The Ogun State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, has described vocational skills as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, urging greater support for vocational education to drive national development.
Speaking at the graduation of students from the Peter Akinola Foundation Youth Centre for Industrial Training in Abeokuta, Onasanya said vocational training offers young people a reliable path to self-reliance and wealth creation, especially as white-collar jobs become scarce.
He noted that the civil service is already overstretched and cannot continue to absorb the thousands of graduates produced yearly by Nigerian universities and polytechnics. According to him, vocational training bridges the employment gap by enabling youths to create jobs rather than wait endlessly for unavailable opportunities.
Onasanya commended the Foundation for standardising skills training and equipping students with relevant knowledge for the economy. He assured that the Ogun State Government remains firmly committed to vocational education as a tool for empowerment and sustainable growth.
