Kaduna Moves to Enforce Safe School Policy

The Kaduna State Government has begun concrete steps to enforce its newly approved State Policy on Safety, Security, and a Violence-Free Learning Environment, with support from the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE).

At a two-day technical session held in Kano from July 16 to 17, key stakeholders developed an actionable plan to implement the policy, which seeks to secure schools across the state. Director of Planning at the State Ministry of Education, Salisu Baba Lawal, stated that the goal is to integrate the policy into the 2026 budget and beyond, thereby ensuring safe learning spaces for pupils and teachers.

PLANE’s Reform Facilitator in Kaduna, Mubarak Siraj, noted that the programme is helping align ministries, civil society, and school authorities to improve learning conditions and respond to growing security challenges. Private school leaders, including Surajo Murtala Dabo of the Association of Model Islamic Schools and Jafaru Yusuf Riyoji of NAPPS, welcomed the move, describing it as timely and inclusive. Kaduna is one of three states where PLANE is working to strengthen foundational learning and safeguard schools as part of Nigeria’s broader rollout of the National Safe School Policy.
