The Kano State Government has approved N1.1 billion to provide free school uniforms for all Primary One pupils across the state. The move is aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children and boosting enrolment.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, stated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to expand access to education, particularly in impoverished and underserved communities.
He explained that giving free uniforms will not only ease the financial burden on parents but also help improve school retention and create equal opportunities for all children. “Education is a right, not a privilege. This initiative will reduce the financial burden on parents and help bring more children into the classroom,” Dawakin Tofa stated.
The government believes the scheme will play a vital role in addressing the out-of-school crisis in Kano, which remains one of the highest in Nigeria.
