A disturbing trend known as “Marker Day” is getting out of control in Bauchi State’s public schools, raising concerns over moral decline and institutional silence.
Initially introduced as a celebratory event marking graduations and academic milestones, Marker Day has evolved into a platform for indecent behaviour, particularly among students in government-run schools. Out of 23 video clips reviewed by former Commissioner of Education, Dr Aliyu U. Tilde, 20 originated from public schools, many showing acts of impropriety committed by students, mostly girls, with defaced uniforms and inappropriate public exposure.
Some videos showed Muslim girls in hijab engaging in acts inconsistent with Islamic teachings and Hausa cultural norms. Names were reportedly inscribed on students’ thighs, while peers filmed and encouraged the behaviour. Alarmingly, most of these incidents occurred within school premises, under the watch of school authorities. This moral breakdown in a conservative state like Bauchi demands urgent government intervention. Public schools, which should be sanctuaries of discipline and academic growth, are instead becoming theatres of shame.
