German multinational company Merck KGaA has announced its commitment to enhancing girls’ education and healthcare in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.
The educational and healthcare initiative, undertaken through the company’s philanthropic arm, the Merck Foundation, was made at the 7th Merck Foundation First Ladies Initiative (MFFLI) Summit 2025. The organisation announced new scholarships for African doctors and expanded funding for underprivileged girls. The aim is to build stronger healthcare systems and empower more women through education.
The summit was inaugurated by Merck Foundation Chairman Prof. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, CEO Sen. Rasha Kelej, and Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, who was recently appointed as an ambassador for the “More Than a Mother” campaign. First Ladies from over a dozen African countries also took part in the event.
The Merck Foundation stated that the initiative reflects its long-term vision of training medical professionals and breaking down barriers that limit girls’ access to education, thereby driving social and economic development across Africa.
