MTN Expands Journalist Training Programme Across Africa

MTN Group has launched the Pan-African Media Innovation Programme (MIP), extending its journalist training initiative beyond Nigeria to other African markets.

The telecoms operator said on its website that the programme, introduced in Nigeria in 2022, will now be open to media practitioners across its footprint. The initiative is being run in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the African Editors Forum (TAEF).

The certified 12-week curriculum will be delivered by UJ and TAEF, combining online academic modules with in-person immersion in Johannesburg.  Participants will cover topics such as digital transformation, media sustainability, ethics, law, entrepreneurship, and the impact of emerging technologies on journalism.

Industry masterclasses, newsroom visits and innovation projects have also been designed to link theory with practice. The programme seeks to strengthen African media resilience at a time when newsrooms face the challenges of misinformation, weak revenue models and digital disruption.

MTN Group’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, Nompilo Morafo, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to building media capacity in line with Africa’s digital future.
