The Programme Director of the African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and Next Generation (Next Gen) Programme, Dr Cyril Obi, has announced that 840 scholars across Africa have received fellowships under the Next Gen initiative.
Obi, represented by Programme Assistant Ms Maimouna Cherif, disclosed this at the inaugural African Peacebuilding Network and Next Gen African Universities Seminar Series (AUSS-NG) held at the University of Abuja.
He explained that the fellowships include 563 Next Gen fellows and 277 APN fellows, made possible through the support of the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC).
According to Obi, the programmes have supported doctoral research, enhanced knowledge production, and advanced the professional development of Africa-based scholars. He added that they have also facilitated the production of high-quality, globally recognised research while strengthening higher education across the continent.
Obi noted that the AUSS initiative connects fellows in a collaborative community of knowledge and practice, allowing alumni and current fellows to share research findings through seminars.
The event’s co-chairs, Dr Joyce Agofure and Dr Sani Adam, expressed their appreciation to Obi, Cherif, and keynote speaker Prof. Babatunde, as well as to participants from universities across Nigeria who attended the inaugural seminar.
