NCC Opens ICT Park at FUTO to Help Technology Grow in South-East

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has opened a new ICT Park at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). This new centre is part of NCC’s plan to support the growth of technology in Nigeria and make learning about digital skills easier for students and young people.

The opening event took place on June 2, 2025. The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, was represented by Mr. Shuaibu Swade at the ceremony. He explained that the FUTO ICT Park is one of six major technology projects that the NCC is establishing in various parts of the country. He explained that the facility will help students and young people develop tech skills, boost research, and support local tech ideas. It includes computer labs, simulation rooms, co-working spaces, and centres for building homegrown innovations.

The ICT Park is situated within FUTO, leveraging the school’s focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and other emerging technologies. Dr Maida said that this partnership between the NCC and FUTO will help create a space where advanced learning meets modern technology, enabling Nigeria to compete globally in digital innovation. He called on the university and local community to take good care of the centre and see it as a shared treasure for the future.

FUTO Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nnenna Otti, thanked the NCC, stating that the park will enable the university to train students who can tackle tech challenges anywhere in the world. Mrs. Udoka Eze, Dean of the School of IT, also promised regular funding to maintain the facility. The new ICT Park includes a 100-seat conference hall, five ICT hub halls, a 24-seater executive lounge, and several collaborative workspaces.
