NELFUND Denies Involvement in Alleged Illegal Deductions from Student Loans

Akintunde Sawyerr, managing director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund)

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has publicly rejected claims made in a report by The Guardian Nigeria that accused 51 universities and other institutions of unauthorised deductions from student loans.

The report, published on April 29, 2025, sparked widespread concern, but NELFUND quickly issued a statement distancing itself from the article.

In the statement, the fund clarified that it was not consulted or involved in any capacity with the publication. NELFUND’s Managing Director, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, said that the organisation had not provided any data or comment for the story and rejected any claims linking it to the allegations.

The fund also reaffirmed its commitment to transparent communication, urging the public and media to verify information through its official channels.

NELFUND continues to play a vital role in administering Nigeria’s student loan programme, which aims to expand access to higher education nationwide.

The statement from NELFUND concluded with a reminder for the public to direct inquiries to its official website or social media platforms for accurate and up-to-date information.
