NFVCB Launches Media Literacy Clubs in Osun Schools

In a move to promote responsible media consumption and critical thinking among young people, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has launched Media Literacy Clubs in secondary schools across Osun State.

The initiative, titled “Making Safer Choices and Safeguarding Young Minds,” aims to equip students with the knowledge to engage with films and social media responsibly.

Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony in Osogbo, Deputy Director of the NFVCB, Osun Centre, Paul Aliwon, said the clubs would operate as school-based extra-curricular groups focused on media education and responsible consumption.

“With the endorsement of the Osun State Ministry of Education, the pilot phase has commenced in four selected secondary schools. We have secured approval to implement the programme in both public and private schools, starting with ten students and one coordinating teacher per school,” Aliwon stated.

He explained that the clubs are designed to familiarise students with NFVCB’s film classification guidelines and consumer advisories. Participants will also serve as youth ambassadors, promoting safe media practices online and offline while gaining insight into the film industry’s value chain and classification standards.

In a message to the event, Dr Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director and CEO of the NFVCB, noted that the programme will also offer mentorship opportunities with top industry actors and foster interaction and competition among members across different schools.

“Preparing students for advocacy in media safety and youth development and engaging them through a dedicated WhatsApp support line is also at the core of the NFVCB Media Literacy Club,” Dr Husseini said.

He added that the club has already been launched in three schools—Ataoja School of Science, Treasure Trove School, and Day Star School—with 30 student ambassadors and three coordinating teachers actively involved.

Dr Husseini commended the Osun State Ministry of Education for its support, describing the initiative as a proactive effort to equip the next generation with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate today’s complex media landscape.
