Medical students from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have provided free healthcare services to residents of Ede, Osun State, as part of their annual outreach programme.
The initiative, organised by the OAU Medical Students’ Association through its Ifumsa Health Awareness Club, involved about 80 medical, dental, and pharmacy students, supported by five surgeons, four anaesthetists, and six perioperative nurses from the university’s teaching hospital.
The outreach offered day-case surgeries, dental and eye consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, hepatitis B and HIV screenings, urinalyses, body mass index assessments, and free medications. Over 300 residents benefited from the programme.
Speaking on Saturday, the club’s chairman, Ibironke Bright, a final-year medical student, said the exercise aimed to extend essential healthcare to underserved communities. “Many people cannot afford basic healthcare services. This initiative allows us to give back and make a meaningful impact,” she said.
Sunday Osuntoye, chair of the local organising committee, added that the programme aligns with global health goals, promoting health equity and universal access to medical services.
The outreach follows similar initiatives in 2024, when the student group provided free surgeries, screenings, and health education to residents of Ifewara in Osun.
