Hundreds of students and community members joined forces on Saturday for a large-scale environmental cleanup at Iyana-Iba Market in Ojo, Lagos State, in observance of World Cleanup Day.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lagos State Chapter, led the initiative, which involved removing solid waste, promoting recycling, and educating traders and residents on sustainable environmental practices. The Lagos Waste Management Authority assisted in evacuating collected plastics, cans, and other refuse.
Ridwan Ajayi, NANS Lagos PRO, said the exercise was a collaboration between student groups, local NGOs, and development partners, including GenImpact Africa, Lima Adejoke Foundation, and the Rotaract Club of Lagos State University.
“The initiative brought together students, leaders, community members, and partner organisations to advance climate action and promote the Sustainable Development Goals,” Ajayi said.
Organisers noted the event marked a milestone in youth-led environmental engagement in Lagos. They thanked all volunteers, market stakeholders, and agencies whose contributions helped make the cleanup successful.
World Cleanup Day is a global campaign in which millions of volunteers across more than 190 countries remove waste from streets, rivers, forests, and public spaces while raising awareness about proper waste management and recycling.
