An aid group has enrolled more than 6,500 out-of-school children in informal learning centres in Katsina State as part of efforts to tackle Nigeria’s education crisis.
GOALPrime Organisation Nigeria said 6,588 children in Musawa Local Government Area had joined the scheme, which is funded by the UN-backed Education Cannot Wait initiative and run with Save the Children and the Katsina government.
The project, which started in October, also targets communities in Zamfara and Kaduna. Children are expected to move into formal schools after three months of informal lessons. Organisers said the scheme includes psychosocial support, hygiene kits and learning materials for pupils and teachers. About 7,000 pupils in formal schools are also expected to benefit.
Local traditional and education authorities welcomed the project, urging parents to ensure children stay in school. They said the initiative could help reduce the impact of insecurity in the region, where armed groups have forced many children out of school.
