A Nigerian scholar, Raphael Ebiefung, has been awarded the Grace Jordan McFadden Professor Programme Fellowship at the University of South Carolina. The fellowship, described by the university as highly competitive, recognises academics who contribute to advancement, gain knowledge, and tackle social challenges.
Ebiefung, a doctoral researcher and former assistant lecturer at Top-Faith University, Nigeria, specialises in human-AI interaction and information behaviour. He will join what the university calls “an elite group of scholars shaping the future of higher education and interdisciplinary inquiry.”
Speaking after the announcement, Ebiefung said the fellowship was “a milestone that underscores Nigeria’s capacity to produce world-class scholars.” He added that his research aimed to improve understanding of human behaviour in relation to AI systems, a field he described as critical in the digital age.
The award adds to a growing list of international academic achievements by Nigerians. In August, Nigerian scientist Deborah Agbakwuru received the Besançon scholarship at the University of Montana. Earlier this year, Nigerian-born researcher Peter Ngene won a €2 million grant from the European Research Council for his work on solid-state electrolytes.
