A Nigerian researcher, Elizabeth Oladipo, has made the country proud with a study that is gaining global attention. She presented her work at the University of Nebraska Medical Centre in the US, where top experts described it as a big step forward.
Her study shows that even when HIV patients are using their drugs, a protein in the virus called HIV Tat remains active in the brain. According to her, this protein can quietly cause serious issues like memory loss, poor reasoning, and gradual damage to the brain.
Scientists who listened to her praised the research, saying it could help doctors find new treatments that will protect patients from this hidden brain damage and improve their daily living. With over 39 million people living with HIV across the world — and Nigeria carrying one of the most significant numbers — her discovery is seen as very important.
Oladipo explained that she aims to fully understand how the Tat protein affects brain cells so that people living with HIV can still enjoy healthier and better lives.
