NUC Insists Federal Government Only Approves Standard-Compliant Private Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has reiterated that the Federal Government only approves private universities that meet strict academic and infrastructural standards to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system.

Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, represented by Ayoteju Ojo, disclosed this during the 20th Anniversary and 17th Convocation of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State. He said the licensing of private universities was aimed at expanding access, improving quality and fostering innovation.

“Redeemer’s University stands as a shining example of this vision,” Ribadu said, commending its record in research, innovation, and community engagement. He charged the graduates to become job creators and ethical leaders, stressing that their certificates should serve as licenses to “innovate, lead, and stand out.”

Vice-Chancellor Prof Shadrach Akindele urged the graduating “Indomitable Set of 2025” to be problem-solvers, not spectators. He said, “The world needs leaders of integrity and vision. Nations are built by determined citizens, not by complaint or cynicism.”
