Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has called on corps members deployed to Borno State to contribute to national development actively.
This appeal was made on Sunday during his visit to the 2025 Batch A Stream II orientation course at the NYSC temporary camp in Maiduguri.
Addressing the 820 corps members present, Nafiu commended them for completing their tertiary education and reminded them of the government’s investment in their academic journey.
He pointed out that many had benefited from subsidised education in public institutions, with certificates recognised internationally.
“The government has invested heavily in your education. It is only fair you give back by serving your country diligently,” he stated.
He spoke about the widespread presence of NYSC across the nation, noting that the scheme reaches areas beyond the scope of major corporations.
Nafiu cautioned against absconding from service, particularly for those considering travelling abroad without completing their service year.
He warned that missing biometric clearance for three consecutive months would result in being flagged as an absconder, leading to automatic remobilisation, potentially in states like Zamfara, Yobe, or Bauchi.
He also urged corps members to actively participate in the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, highlighting its role in addressing the nation’s unemployment challenges.
“SAED offers you legitimate avenues to earn income beyond your degree. Embrace it,” he advised.
Concluding his address, Nafiu encouraged the corps members to approach their service year with dedication and commitment. “What is worth doing at all is worth doing well. Start strong and finish stronger,” he said.
