Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, has said it will launch a full investigation into the midnight fire that destroyed almost all its academic gowns. The gowns, used for matriculation and convocation, were kept at the Directorate of Students Affairs building, where the fire broke out on September 2.
In a statement signed by Dr. Wale Balogun, the Deputy Registrar, the school explained that the fire caused damage worth millions of naira. The entire stock of graduation gowns was lost, though thankfully, no life was affected. According to reports, quick response from the Vice Chancellor, staff, and the Works Directorate helped stop the fire from spreading to other parts of the campus.
The management described the incident as a major setback, since the gowns are essential for the university’s key ceremonies. However, it assured students and staff that plans are already being made to reduce the impact on upcoming events.
