Academic and non-academic staff of the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora, have embarked on an indefinite strike over delayed and incomplete salary payments.
The industrial action, which began on July 1, was declared jointly by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU). The unions stated that the decision followed repeated appeals to the college management regarding unpaid entitlements. In a joint statement, the union leaders—Comrades Tajudeen Adeyemo (NASU), Oyediran S. O. (SSANIP), and Tiamiyu M. B. (ASUP)—said staff were recently informed that the institution could no longer augment the state government’s subvention to pay full salaries.
They noted that although the Oyo State Government increased its monthly subvention by 25 per cent in January, and the college’s internally generated revenue has improved, workers still receive salaries in fractions and often late. According to the unions, OYSCATECH remains the only tertiary institution in the state experiencing such persistent salary issues. They added that the recent hike in tuition fees has not translated into improved staff welfare. The unions called on Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene by increasing funding to the college and ensuring a sustainable salary structure. They vowed not to resume work until their demands are met.
