Oyo Rejects 65-Year Retirement Age for Workers

The Oyo State Government has rejected the proposal to extend the retirement age for teachers and other civil servants from 60 to 65 years.

This decision contrasts with moves by some states and the Federal Government, which recently approved the new retirement age for specific categories of workers. In February, the Federal Government extended the age limit for clinically skilled health workers to 65 years to boost healthcare delivery.

Following that, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) demanded the same adjustment for all civil servants. Some states, including Ekiti and Niger, have already adopted the new policy. Ekiti Governor Biodun Oyebanji approved it for teachers, while Niger State said its implementation would begin in January 2026.

However, Oyo State insists it will maintain the current 60-year or 35-year service limit, saying the extension is not part of its policy direction for now.
