Private school owners in Ogbomoso North, Oyo State, have raised alarm over what they called the crippling impact of multiple taxation on their operations. The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), in a statement signed by its chairman, Wale Ojewumi, urged governments at all levels to stop seeing them as rivals and instead support them as key partners in national development.
Ojewumi explained that private schools play a vital role in filling gaps left by overstretched public schools, stressing that their mission is to complement the government’s efforts in educating Nigerian children. He warned that if the burden of heavy levies, multiple taxes and poor access to funding continues, many schools may collapse, leaving thousands of children stranded.
The group therefore appealed for fairer policies and recognition, insisting that without the contribution of private schools, Nigeria’s dream of a prosperous and educated future would be challenging to achieve.
