According to a report, recent stories claiming that the Federal Government approved the teaching of Mandarin in Nigeria’s Senior Secondary School curriculum are false.
Speculation followed the release of a revised curriculum by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), which streamlined subject offerings to make learners “future-ready.” The new policy takes effect this session and will be implemented in stages across primary and secondary levels.
During the inauguration of the 14th Chinese Corner at Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Abuja, the Secretary of Education for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Danlami Hayyo, reportedly said Chinese had been included as an international language option alongside French and Arabic.
However, a review of the 17-page curriculum document showed that Mandarin was not listed. Instead, Nigerian history was reintroduced as a compulsory subject from Primary 1 to JSS 3, while Civic Education and Social Studies were merged at the senior secondary level. For students in Humanities, French and Arabic remain the only approved foreign language options.
