Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California have recorded a breakthrough in nuclear fusion, the process that powers the sun. In December 2022, the team reported producing more energy from a controlled fusion reaction than was consumed to create it.
The breakthrough was achieved by using 192 lasers to compress a tiny hydrogen fuel pellet, triggering a burst of fusion energy that generated a net gain for the first time.
Fusion offers the prospect of virtually limitless clean energy without the long-term radioactive waste produced by nuclear fission. However, scientists caution that the Livermore reaction lasted only fractions of a second, far from the continuous energy production required for commercial use.
The development has forced governments and private investors to commit billions of dollars into fusion research, with several startups racing to convert the advance into practical reactors.
While the timeline remains uncertain, the achievement has been described as a significant step toward a future powered by the same reaction that drives the stars.
