The Sokoto State Government has suspended the collection of school fees in all public secondary schools, warning principals against defying the order.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof Ladan Ala, issued the directive after a committee was set up to review complaints about charges imposed on students. The suspension will remain until the committee submits its recommendations.
In a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Mohammad Iya, Ala stressed that principals must not demand payment for the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levy, admission fees, testimonials, statements of results, or Muslim Students Society (MSS) fees.
Other suspended charges include fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results and certificates, as well as answer sheets, screening forms, and Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) charges and certificates for NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS.
The commissioner warned that any principal found violating the directive would face immediate administrative sanctions.
