Security tensions escalated at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State, on Monday as soldiers were deployed to examination halls following threats of disruption by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).
Students taking semester examinations were met with uniformed personnel in their halls, a move the management said was necessary to prevent a breakdown of order. The school authorities explained that security forces were invited after union leaders allegedly vowed to halt the examinations over unresolved disputes. The union, however, condemned the deployment, describing it as intimidation and an attempt to silence their demands.
ASUP leaders accused the management of neglecting staff welfare, mismanaging funds, and lacking transparency in promotions. They argued that the use of soldiers undermined academic freedom and diverted attention from genuine grievances.
Students expressed concern that the crisis could further disrupt academic activities. While some said the sight of soldiers created more tension during examinations, others were worried about possible delays in the academic calendar if the issue persists.
