The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a stern warning of a total industrial action in 2026 if the Federal Government fails to present a “credible and realistic” offer to non-teaching university staff before December 31, 2025.
The declaration followed the union’s 53rd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Jos, Plateau State. SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, decried the repeated marginalisation of non-teaching staff in the payment of Earned Allowances and the renegotiation processes, insisting that the ₦50 billion agreed upon in the 2022 MoU be released without further delay. He also demanded that Inter-University Centres and research institutes previously excluded be fully covered.
Ibrahim further expressed deep concern over deteriorating security in educational institutions, highlighting recent kidnappings in Niger and Kebbi States. He called for improved perimeter protection, modern surveillance, and better-resourced campus security units.
On government proposals for public-private partnerships and divestment of municipal services, SSANU warned that such initiatives must not threaten job security or worsen employment conditions.
Beyond universities, the union urged coordinated action to rebuild public systems, support farmers, enhance healthcare, and invest in climate-resilient infrastructure.
NEC stressed that failure to address these demands would compel SSANU to initiate “firm, coordinated, system-wide industrial action” to defend its members’ rights and welfare.
