A new investigation has revealed that key government agencies in Nigeria’s six South-West states collect and store citizens’ personal data without privacy policies in place.
The review by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) covered four agencies in each state — Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEB), Teachers’ Service Commissions (TESCOM), Primary Health Care Agencies or Health Ministries, and State Bureaus of Statistics or Planning.
Findings showed that in Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti, none of these institutions published clear privacy policies on their official websites.
The data collected includes school enrolment records, examination details, teacher recruitment information, immunisation records, patient health data, and demographic statistics.
Experts have warned that operating without privacy frameworks exposes citizens to the risks of data misuse, which is particularly pronounced as digital systems expand in the education, healthcare, and planning sectors.
