The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), created to help infrastructural development in Nigeria’s higher institutions, is facing criticism over prolonged project delays that have left students and lecturers frustrated nationwide.
At the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), projects approved as far back as 2013, 2015, and 2018 are only being completed in 2025.
Lecture theatres, laboratories, and departmental complexes meant to ease overcrowding have been delayed for nearly a decade, forcing staff and students into makeshift spaces. Similar challenges have also been observed at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, and the School of Nursing, Idi-Aba, where facilities remained abandoned or overtaken by weeds.
Students of these institutions lament that the outdated learning environment undermines the quality of education and global competitiveness.
In Ogun State, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) also battles stalled projects, with lecture halls left uncompleted due to inconsistent funding and weak contractor accountability.
The problem extends beyond the state to institutions such as LAUTECH, University of Ibadan, OAU, FUTA, FUOYE, UNIOSUN, and the University of Abuja, where projects often span nearly a decade before delivery. However, Stakeholders attribute the delays to bureaucratic bottlenecks, irregular fund releases, and poor monitoring.
They warn that unless the government enforces stricter oversight and accountability, Nigerian tertiary institutions will continue to lag behind global standards, leaving students as the most significant casualties.
