Prof Edoba Omoregie, SAN, Professor Owunari Georgewill at UNIBEN’s 51st Convocation ceremony
President Bola Tinubu has lauded the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), for advancing technical and vocational education at the institution. The commendation came during UNIBEN’s 51st Convocation and 55th Founders Day ceremonies.
Represented by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, Tinubu praised Omoregie’s introduction of the Artisan Training Programme in partnership with the Industrial Training Fund, describing it as aligned with the federal government’s agenda to cultivate practical skills, enterprise, and innovation.
Omoregie highlighted progress under his administration, including the smooth completion of the 2024/2025 academic calendar, graduation of 14,083 first-degree and 1,790 postgraduate students – a more than 600 per cent increase from the previous convocation, creation of five new faculties, and approval of fifteen new programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The University Chancellor, Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, commended the federal government’s seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new tertiary institutions, noting that it will strengthen existing universities. Pro-Chancellor Prof. Shuaibu Umaru added that UNIBEN has produced over 370,000 graduates, with programmes fully aligned to NUC standards.
