UAB Researchers Pioneer Neurodevice, Smart Pacifier

Dr S. Abdollah Mirbozorgi and collaborators at UAB and Purdue University are developing two cutting-edge NIH-funded projects with the potential to transform healthcare.


The first project targets diabetes through a neurological approach. Mirbozorgi’s implantable device maps nerve activity between the brain, stomach, and pancreas.


Using on-implant AI, it analyses signals and delivers closed-loop vagus nerve stimulation, offering a non-pharmaceutical strategy to study and potentially reverse diabetes. Co-investigators include Amy Warriner, M.D., Ananda Basu, M.D., Rita Basu, M.D., and Benjamin Larimer, PhD.


The second project reimagines the pacifier. Designed for fragile newborns, this device utilises acoustic sensing and AI to continuously monitor cardiopulmonary function in real-time. Purdue leads the project, with Mirbozorgi as UAB site PI, alongside neonatologists Namasivayam Ambalavanan, M.D., and Colm P. Travers, M.D.


Both four-year R01 projects aim to fill critical healthcare gaps, advancing diabetes treatment and improving infant respiratory monitoring, combining neuroengineering, AI, and biomedical expertise.
