As the University of Ilorin marks its golden jubilee, it stands tall as one of Nigeria’s most consistent success stories in higher education.
From winning three of 17 slots in the Nigerian Universities Doctoral Thesis Award Scheme (NUDTAS) in 2008/2009 — a feat repeated in 2010, 2011, and 2012 — to filing 20 patents in 2024, UNILORIN’s record of academic innovation remains unmatched. The institution also boasts the highest research output in Scopus-indexed journals in sub-Saharan Africa and has been a top performer in the National Research Fund grants.
The university’s legacy extends beyond its academic pursuits. It was the first Nigerian university to host the West African University Games in the 21st century and holds Guinness World Records for the Longest Mathematics Lesson and Fastest Five Skin Fade Haircuts — both set by students in 2024 and 2025.
The University of Ilorin’s Faculty of Law has produced many notable Senior Advocates of Nigeria, including its current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole.
