The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) football team has emerged as champions of the Northeast preliminaries of the Nigerian University Games (NUGA), booking their place in the national finals.
UNIMAID and Gombe State University (GSU) both finished the qualifiers with 9 points, but UNIMAID claimed the top spot due to a superior goal difference. The Maiduguri side ended with +8, edging past GSU’s +6.
In all four matches played, UNIMAID was exceptional, winning three games and scoring 11 goals while conceding only three. Their attacking strength made them the highest-scoring team of the tournament. GSU also impressed but narrowly missed out on first place.
Other participating schools included Yobe State University, Borno State University, and the Federal University of Kashere, all of which showed spirited performances. With this victory, Team UNIMAID will represent the Northeast zone at the NUGA national finals. The final will bring together the top teams from the other zones to compete for the national trophy.
