UNIPORT Lecturer Warns Parents on Fake Sign-Outs

A senior lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Ovunda Ihunwo, has advised parents to be careful about the growing culture of “sign-out” parties among Nigerian students, describing it as misleading.

According to him, sign-out was originally a simple way for students to mark the end of examinations. However, it has now evolved into elaborate events featuring expensive clothes, loud music, and extensive social media displays. He said many parents even join in, believing it means their children have officially graduated.

Dr Ihunwo, however, warned that most of those celebrating are not fully cleared. “Some still have carryovers, incomplete projects, missing results or even unpaid school fees,” he noted.

He added that such jamborees create a misleading impression, deceive parents, and divert attention from the actual requirements for graduation.
