Professor Richard Ajah of UNIUYO elected President of UFTAN
Professor Richard Ajah of the University of Uyo has been elected President of the University French Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (UFTAN).
His election took place during the Association’s 26th annual conference and AGM held in Awka, Anambra State. Other executive members elected include Professor Busari Lasisi as Vice President, Dr Gracious Ojiebun as Secretary, and Dr Terry Osawaru as Public Relations Officer.
At the conference, themed “French Language and Employability,” UFTAN thanked the Federal Government and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) for reinstating the Nigerian French Language Village (NFLV) in Badagry among its beneficiaries. The Association also acknowledged support from the French Embassy, including the French Embassy Fund project and plans to establish French Resource Centres in tertiary institutions.
However, the teachers raised concerns over French being listed as an optional subject in primary and secondary schools under the National Education Sector Reform Initiative, urging the government to reconsider the policy. They highlighted the strategic importance of French for Nigeria’s engagement in West Africa and the global community.
The conference featured a keynote by Professor Eugenia Mbanefo of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike. It was attended by representatives from the University of Uyo, NFLV, and the French Embassy.
