UNTH Probes Alleged Negligence in Patient’s Death

Following an allegation of negligence by the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu staff, which led to the death of a patient, Mrs Charity Unachukwu, the university management has launched an investigation to find out the truth. The incident was said to have happened on September 21, 2025.

Reports on social media claimed that Mrs Unachukwu was first taken to the hospital’s emergency ward but was turned back because there was no space available. It was further alleged that delays and poor attention across several departments contributed to her death about 12 hours later.

Confirming the probe, UNTH management stated that it was essential to establish the facts and ensure that anyone found guilty would be held accountable. The hospital also appealed to the general public to remain calm and give the university enough time to investigate the allegation. They assured that the process would be transparent.

Meanwhile, the allegation has sparked fresh concerns about the care patients receive in Nigerian hospitals, particularly the need for improved emergency response and stronger accountability among medical staff.
