The Osun State government has responded to recent reports about the poor condition of Wole Soyinka Government High School in Ejigbo, calling the claims misleading and unfair.
A recent report by P.M. News Nigeria showed pictures of damaged buildings at the school, suggesting neglect by the current administration. However, the state government claimed that the damage was caused by a heavy rainstorm and exacerbated by substandard repair work carried out before Governor Ademola Adeleke took office.
The previous administration under Governor Oyetola had hired a contractor to renovate the school near the end of its term. However, the work was poorly done and did not meet the required standards. When the storm struck this year, the already weak structures suffered further damage.
The Adeleke government says it has made education a top priority. While Wole Soyinka High School was not included in the first phase of its school renovation plan, it has been marked for urgent repair in the next phase.
The state also denies owing any money to the contractor who handled the last renovation. It emphasised that strict accountability is in place and that negligence of this kind will not be tolerated in future projects.
Governor Adeleke’s team pointed to many other schools across Osun that are being improved under their leadership. They said it is wrong to let one isolated case overshadow the progress being made in public education across the state.
The government called on the media to check facts carefully and present balanced reports. “The people of Osun deserve accurate information that reflects the real efforts to rebuild and improve education,” the statement said.
Finally, the Adeleke administration promised to continue restoring dignity and quality in Osun’s education system and said no false story would distract them from this mission.
