Youths Urged to Leverage ICT for Development

Adebukola Onashoga, a professor of Computer Science and Cybersecurity at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, has advised Nigerian youth to leverage their ICT skills for personal growth and national development.
She delivered the charge during the 16th convocation lecture at Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State, titled “Empowering the Gen Zs: Building Adaptive ICT Talents for the Future.”

Onashoga described Gen Z as digitally inclined and naturally innovative but emphasised that these traits must be backed by discipline, structured learning, and a growth mindset. She noted that Nigeria’s fast-changing digital environment requires young people who understand the principles behind technology, not just how to use it.

According to her, the future of work is interdisciplinary and demands creators who can collaborate across sectors. She urged students to strengthen problem-solving skills, think critically, and adopt a builder’s mindset.

She also encouraged them to acquire at least one tech skill, execute practical projects, and prioritise creativity over passive consumption.
JABU’s Vice Chancellor, Olasebikan Fakolujo, said the lecture aimed to position young Nigerians for leadership and digital readiness.

Meanwhile, the National Universities Commission confirmed the receipt of €3m from the French Development Agency as part of a loan to enhance ICT capacity in 10 universities nationwide.
