The Akwa Ibom Government has urged parents to enrol their children in public schools, amid falling pupil numbers despite free education policies.
Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Anietie Etuk, stated that declining enrollment contradicts Governor Umo Eno’s vision of education as a foundation for sustainable development. He called on head teachers, local education authorities, and community leaders to intensify outreach ahead of the 2025/2026 academic session, starting September 15. Accurate enrolment data and collaboration with traditional, religious, and community institutions were emphasised to boost participation.
SUBEB officials warned that negligence by school administrators or community leaders would no longer be tolerated, stressing that free primary and junior secondary education remains non-negotiable.
Despite government investments in infrastructure, teacher training, and learning materials, private schools continue to attract more pupils. Retired principal Donatus Ekpa attributed this to better performance and university admissions from private institutions. In contrast, retired teacher Anietie Ita criticised private schools for hiring unqualified staff and compromising standards for profit.
The state faces a challenge in balancing the quality of public education with the growing demand for private schooling, raising questions about the effectiveness of government oversight in ensuring that all children have access to quality learning.
