The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced plans to meet with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) over a directive affecting lecturers without a master’s degree.
NBTE’s circular, dated September 10, 2025, instructed that academic staff in polytechnics and other Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions who do not obtain a master’s degree within five years of employment will be reclassified as non-teaching staff. The circular was addressed to rectors and provosts of TVET institutions nationwide.
ASUP National President, Shammah Kpanja, said the union would engage NBTE in discussions to address concerns raised by affected lecturers and protect their professional status. The policy is aimed at raising teaching standards in technical education. However, it has sparked anxiety among lecturers who fear losing their academic roles if they fail to meet the new qualification requirement.
