The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has renewed calls for the Federal Government to pay its members’ withheld salaries, rejecting the “no work, no pay” policy implemented during the 2022 strike.
During a press briefing in Awka, the coordinator of ASUU’s Owerri Zone, Professor Dennis Ariwodo, demanded the immediate payment of three and a half months’ salaries and outstanding third-party deductions. The zone comprises Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State University, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Professor Ariwodo argued that the strike was caused by the government’s failure to honour agreements, including the 2009 FGN-ASUU pact and recommendations from the 2012 Needs Assessment Committee, which estimated N1.3 trillion for university revitalisation.
He criticised the poor funding of education, noting that Nigeria’s public universities failed to make the top 1,000 global rankings, while peers from other African countries did.
The union is also urging improved budgetary allocation to education, settlement of promotion arrears, and immediate release of revitalisation funds to halt further decay in the system.
