The British Council has pledged more substantial support for Nigeria’s creative sector. The council promised long-term partnerships, training programmes, and broader opportunities for young people and educators.
The assurance was made during Creative Economy Week 2025 in Lagos, where creative professionals, cultural hubs, industry leaders, and policymakers gathered to discuss ways to boost skills and investment in the sector.
Andona McConnell, Country Director of the British Council in Nigeria, stated that the organisation is committed to creating sustainable impact through collaboration at the policy, institutional, and community levels. She emphasised that the creative industry has the potential to drive economic growth, empower young people, and showcase Nigeria’s talent on the global stage.
The move by the United Kingdom-funded organisation is seen as a significant boost to Nigeria’s creative economy, which has garnered global attention over the years. However, despite its growth, the sector continues to struggle with inadequate funding, weak structures, and limited international exposure.
