Benue State University has promoted 146 lecturers to associate and full professorships after a backlog of pending cases dating back to 2021.
Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Simon Ubwa, announced the development in Makurdi on Wednesday, saying the delays had been unacceptable. “When I came, there were 146 senior lecturers and associate professors waiting for promotions from 2021, 2022 and 2023. We desired to clear the arrears because leaving it to linger could cause a crisis,” he said.
Ubwa explained that 90 academics were cleared in the first batch and 38 in the second, while the final set will soon be approved by the university’s council. He added that management had addressed other pressing challenges, including restoring water supply to staff quarters and hostels and fixing nine broken power generators across campus.
On the ongoing strike by non-academic staff, the Vice Chancellor said most of their demands had been resolved and were awaiting government approval. He appealed for patience, noting that the state governor had directed officials to finalise discussions, and a memorandum of agreement had already been signed with the union.
