Teachers in Edo State who have made outstanding contributions to education and community development were honoured on Friday at the 8th Salu Oniha Okonofua Foundation Teacher Excellence Awards.
The annual event, held in memory of the late philanthropist and educationist, Oniha Okonofua, celebrated teachers and other individuals who have advanced the teaching profession.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Foundation’s Executive Director, Dr Benjamin Okonofua, represented by Programme Coordinator, Mrs Tega Ogbewe, described education as the cornerstone of societal progress. He said the late Okonofua believed education was more than a fundamental right, but a transformative tool capable of uplifting both individuals and communities.
Okonofua’s vision, he explained, was a world free of illiteracy where every child and adult could read and write with confidence. “To him, education was the greatest equaliser, capable of breaking the cycle of poverty and creating a brighter future,” he said. The award continues to uphold his legacy of promoting excellence in teaching.
