The Federal Government has reinstated History as a compulsory subject for pupils from Primary 1 to Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS 3), a move education stakeholders have described as a milestone in curriculum reform.
According to the Federal Government, the new framework will streamline the number of subjects taught across primary, junior secondary, senior secondary, and technical education, to deepen learning and reduce the burden on students.
Stakeholders welcomed the decision, noting that it would strengthen national identity and civic understanding among young Nigerians. By embedding History into early education, the government hopes students will have a good grasp of the nation’s past, cultural heritage, and institutional development.
The Federal Ministry of Education confirmed that the revised curriculum would be implemented nationwide, with resources and training provided to support teachers.
The ministry noted that the policy shift was informed by extensive consultations with educators, curriculum experts, and policymakers.
