North Eastern University, Gombe holds First Entrepreneurship, Innovation Conference
Experts have urged a significant overhaul of Nigeria’s education system to embed entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation from the earliest stages of learning.
The call came at the 1st International Conference on Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship (IBUFINE 2025), held at North Eastern University, Gombe, with the theme “Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development.”
Prof. Nuruddeen Oyekola of the Certified Institute of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Education stressed that universities must go beyond teaching theory, focusing instead on project-based learning and helping students turn ideas into viable ventures. He highlighted that scientific discoveries often remain unused due to insufficient government support.
Prof. Babangida Muhammad Musa of Gombe State University emphasised the need to equip students with soft skills, critical thinking, and mastery of AI to thrive in modern industries. He called for cross-department collaboration and engagement with industry leaders to provide practical insights.
Pro-Chancellor Prof. Sani Jauro said the university prioritises exposing students to real-world experiences alongside classroom learning, citing partnerships with universities in Malaysia and innovation-focused organisations in China.
Dr Abubakar Aliyu, Head of Business Administration, noted that fostering an entrepreneurial mindset prepares graduates to create jobs, tackle unemployment, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s knowledge economy.
