Federal Polytechnic Oko has been named among the Tertiary Institutions that will benefit from the pilot phase of the Sustainable Energy Solution, sponsored by TETFund in Tertiary Institutions.
The need for Alternative Energy Supply in tertiary institutions across the country has become imperative due to the incessant power outages and insufficient energy supply that tertiary Institutions have had to contend with over the years, which has seriously hindered practical academic and administrative activities. The situation led to the operation of a diesel plant, which comes with very high running costs and is therefore unsustainable.
This unfortunate development seriously hampered the productivity and efficiency of the Institutions and greatly affected research and innovation due to the inaccessibility of critical facilities, such as laboratories and libraries.
Therefore, following a presidential directive, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has collaborated with the Rural Electrification Agency to inaugurate a high-powered steering committee on alternative energy solutions. The committee will undertake energy audits and technical assessments in tertiary institutions nationwide to provide recommendations. This steering committee has already concluded its assignment and presented its report to TETFund.
The Federal Polytechnic Oko hosted the steering committee team, led by Dr Adeola Eleri, in May 2025. The Committee assessed the Polytechnic’s carrying capacity in terms of equipment in various departments and respective energy consumption and had extensive interaction with the Rector, Dr Chioma Irene Awuzie and other members of the Management. The high cost of operating a diesel plant at the Polytechnic came to light, and it was deemed unsustainable.
